The University of Venda (Univen) hosted the national kick-off of the International Knowledge Cooperation on the History of Slavery and Its Afterlives on March 4, 2026.

Partnering with the Embassy and Consulate of the Netherlands and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, the event gathered academics, diplomats, and experts in a conference room buzzing with laptops, microphones, and earnest discussions.

Titled “Slavery and Its Afterlives: Human Rights, Indigenous Knowledge and Global Dialogue,” the workshop critically examined Dutch colonial slavery’s foundations, its socio-economic and cultural ramifications, and its lingering impacts on contemporary societies. Participants reflected on how indigenous perspectives can enrich global human rights conversations, fostering cross-cultural understanding and reconciliation.

Univen’s Directorate of International Relations spearheaded the initiative, emphasizing education’s role in healing historical wounds. As South Africa grapples with its own colonial legacies, this collaboration highlights the need for ongoing dialogue. Organizers hope it will inspire broader research and policy changes, promoting a more equitable future. The event underscores Univen’s commitment to creating informed leaders amid global challenges.
