In a bid to assess and refine the trajectory of regional integration, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) kicked off its Senior Officials and Experts Meeting on the Midterm Review of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020-2030 at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) headquarters.
The two-day gathering, running from March 4-5, brings together delegates from SADC’s 16 member states to evaluate progress on key pillars, including industrialization, infrastructure development, and peace-building. Amid ongoing challenges—including climate change impacts and the post-pandemic economic recovery —the review aims to identify gaps and propose adjustments to ensure the plan’s goals—such as poverty reduction and sustainable growth—are met by 2030.
DIRCO officials emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts, stating that the RISDP serves as a blueprint for fostering intra-regional trade and stability. Outcomes from the meeting are expected to inform the upcoming SADC Summit, potentially influencing policy directions across the bloc.
As flags of member nations fluttered in the venue, symbolizing unity, experts highlighted the need for accelerated implementation to counter global uncertainties. This review underscores SADC’s commitment to a prosperous Southern Africa.
