U.S. Consul General Rebecca Gonzales recently visited the Denis Hurley Centre, a beacon of compassion in the heart of the city, where she witnessed firsthand its vital services providing free meals and medical care to the most vulnerable residents.
Over the past decade, the centre has served nearly 1.5 million meals to those facing hunger and hardship. Today, it treats approximately 2,000 patients each month through its dedicated clinic, offering dignity and essential healthcare without charge.
Gonzales expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Raymond Perrier and the entire team for their unwavering dedication. “Your tireless work feeding and caring for our neighbors inspires us all,” she said, emphasizing the values of compassion and service that drive the organization.
Founded by Gerald “Paddy” Kearney, a former U.S. Fulbright Scholar, the centre has built a proud legacy of interfaith cooperation and community support. The visit underscores the enduring partnership between the United States and this extraordinary Durban institution.
