Lebanese Ambassador Giscard El Khoury held constructive discussions with Nelia Barnard, Acting Chief Director for the Middle East at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), focusing on strengthening bilateral relations.
The meeting reviewed progress in South Africa-Lebanon ties, re-established in 1994 and enriched by a vibrant Lebanese diaspora of around 30,000 in South Africa. Building on a January 2026 Memorandum of Understanding, both sides explored deeper political cooperation and mutual support on regional issues.
Amid escalating Middle East tensions—including recent U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and renewed attacks on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon—the talks underscored Pretoria’s dedication to diplomatic solutions and regional stability. South Africa has consistently condemned Israeli military actions in Lebanon and welcomed subsequent cease-fires.
They expressed strong optimism for future collaboration, highlighting untapped potential in trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges. The engagement signals a promising new phase in the longstanding SA-Lebanon partnership.
