The Singapore High Commission hosted and chaired the inaugural meeting of the ASEAN Pretoria Committee (APC) under its 2026 chairmanship on 25 February, marking a key step in strengthening ASEAN-South Africa relations.
Established in 2008, the APC brings together ASEAN Heads of Mission resident in Pretoria to coordinate regional engagement in South Africa. Bilateral ties have flourished since, with South Africa acceding to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia in 2020 and becoming the continent’s first ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner in 2023.
Delegates highlighted robust growth in trade, investment, and tourism, while noting significant untapped potential as both sides pursue diversified economic partnerships.
Under Singapore’s leadership, the APC endorsed a programme focused on raising ASEAN’s profile among South African stakeholders—including government at national, provincial, and municipal levels, businesses, and civil society—and deepening engagement. Discussions also centred on advancing the 2024-2028 Practical Cooperation Areas framework.
Singapore expressed enthusiasm for building on prior chairs’ efforts and collaborating with South African partners to sustain this positive momentum.
