Ambassador Suliman Highlights Job-Creating Power of Tourism

The South African Embassy in Damascus hosted a targeted tourism promotion workshop on 17 February 2026, aiming to boost travel from Syria to South Africa and strengthen bilateral ties. Held at the Seven Gates Hotel, the event drew 55 Syrian tour operators who market South African holiday packages, alongside representatives from Syrian official media and Emirates Airlines’ Syria sales manager.
Ambassador Ashraf Yusuf Suliman opened proceedings with remarks underscoring the robust and expanding diplomatic relationship between the Republic of South Africa and the Syrian Arab Republic. He stressed tourism’s role in driving economic growth, creating jobs and helping alleviate poverty.
First Secretary (Political) Ofhani Sengani delivered a comprehensive presentation showcasing attractions across South Africa’s nine provinces, spotlighting traditional festivals, artisanal crafts, historical landmarks, rural landscapes and natural wonders. First Secretary (Administration and Consular Services) Thapelo Tonyane outlined visa requirements for Syrian passport holders, addressing practical barriers to travel. The initiative reflects Pretoria’s push to expand tourism markets in the Middle East.
