New Greek Envoy Presents Credentials as SA-Greece Ties Enter New Chapter

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) on Monday formally received the Letters of Credence from the newly appointed Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic, Her Excellency Efthalia Kakiopoulou.
Deputy Director-General Monyela accepted the diplomatic credentials during a ceremony at DIRCO headquarters, marking the Greek envoy’s official accreditation to South Africa. Official photographs show the ambassador and DDG Monyela exchanging warm handshakes before the flags of both nations, with a third senior official also present.
DIRCO hailed the occasion as a platform for deeper engagement. “We’re looking forward to a continued partnership & shared growth between SA & Greece,” the department stated on social media.
The move is expected to enhance trade, tourism, and political cooperation between the two longstanding partners. Greece remains an important EU voice for South Africa on Mediterranean and multilateral issues. Observers view the appointment as timely, reinforcing people-to-people and economic links at a moment of global realignment.
