Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, His Excellency Benjamin Anani Quashie, hosted a key diplomatic engagement in Pretoria, pledging support for an innovative continental initiative that harnesses football to strengthen democracy.

On 19 February 2026, Mr Larry Opare-Otoo, official consultant to Ghana’s Parliament for the Democracy Cup Match Project, and South African football consultant Mr Tsepo Riba paid a courtesy call on the High Commissioner. The visitors briefed Quashie on plans spearheaded by Ghana’s Rt. Honourable Speaker of Parliament for the widely backed Democracy Cup Football Match Initiative.

The project aims to promote and enhance democratic values across Africa through the unifying power of sport. In response, High Commissioner Quashie expressed appreciation for the update and assured the delegation of his Mission’s full backing for this commendable endeavour. The meeting underscores growing Ghana-South Africa cooperation in creative diplomacy and pan-African outreach.
