Dominican Republic and University of Pretoria Explore Academic Partnerships and Research Collaboration

The Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to South Africa, Her Excellency Erika Álvarez Rodríguez, met with the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Pretoria, Professor Francis Petersen, to explore opportunities for expanding academic cooperation between the University of Pretoria and universities in the Dominican Republic.

The high-level engagement underscored the shared commitment of both countries to strengthening educational and research partnerships that promote innovation, knowledge exchange, and international collaboration.

Expanding Academic Partnerships

During the meeting, discussions centred on establishing stronger institutional links between the University of Pretoria and Dominican higher education institutions. Key areas of cooperation included:

  • Student exchange and mobility programmes
  • Faculty exchange and academic collaboration
  • Joint research initiatives
  • Development of long-term academic partnerships
  • Strengthening internationalisation in higher education

These initiatives are expected to create new opportunities for students, academics and researchers from both South Africa and the Dominican Republic while fostering greater intercultural understanding and academic excellence.

Joining Professor Francis Petersen were several senior representatives from the University of Pretoria, including:

The Embassy of the Dominican Republic was represented by:

  • Minister Counsellor Carlos Vicioso
