Western Cape showcases progress in renewable energy development as the European Union reinforces support for South Africa’s energy transition
The Consul General of Belgium in Cape Town, Nicolas Fierens Gevaert, welcomed European Union diplomatic colleagues to the Belgian Residence on 11 June for a working breakfast focused on energy security, renewable energy development, and the emerging green hydrogen economy in the Western Cape.
The engagement provided an opportunity for European diplomats to gain insights into the Western Cape Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen energy resilience and accelerate the transition towards a sustainable and low-carbon energy future.
Western Cape’s Energy Resilience Strategy
The breakfast featured Mr. Alwie Lester, Special Advisor on Energy to Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, as the guest speaker.
Appointed in January 2023, Mr. Lester has been tasked with spearheading the province’s energy resilience programme aimed at mitigating the economic impacts of load shedding and improving the reliability of electricity supply across the Western Cape.
During his presentation, Mr. Lester outlined the provincial government’s progress in expanding access to affordable, accessible, and sustainable energy sources. He highlighted the increasing role played by private sector-led renewable energy projects in supporting the province’s efforts to reduce dependence on the national grid and enhance energy security.
The Western Cape has positioned itself as a leading subnational actor in South Africa’s energy transition, pursuing innovative mechanisms to attract investment and encourage independent power generation initiatives that can safeguard economic growth and business confidence.
Green Hydrogen Opportunities
A key aspect of Mr. Lester’s presentation focused on the significant opportunities associated with green hydrogen development in the Western Cape.
Green hydrogen, produced using renewable electricity, is increasingly viewed as a strategic component of South Africa’s future energy mix and a potential driver of industrial growth, export opportunities, and job creation.
Mr. Lester shared updates on the latest prospects for developing a green hydrogen ecosystem in the region, highlighting the province’s favourable renewable energy resources, port infrastructure, and growing interest from international investors and technology partners.
European Union Support for South Africa’s Energy Transition
The discussion also underscored the strong partnership between South Africa and the European Union in advancing climate action and sustainable energy development.
Through its Global Gateway Strategy and complementary cooperation programmes, the European Union continues to support South Africa’s efforts to achieve a just energy transition, strengthen energy security, and unlock the economic potential of green hydrogen.
