A Day to Remember
Today totally rocked—one of the most exciting and inspiring days I’ve had in ages! I stepped into the High Commission of Mauritius in Pretoria feeling pumped with energy, with just a touch of nerves.
This wasn’t some boring classroom exercise or a pretend Model UN session. Nope—this was real, live diplomacy, and I got to dive right in.
Making It Happen
Mr. Mndeni Mthabela from Diplomacy SA made it all possible once again. He’s doing incredible work connecting young people like me—who are passionate about global affairs—with real diplomats and embassies across South Africa.
I’m seriously grateful to him for creating these opportunities and believing in students who dream big. Later, he posted photos from the visit, calling me his “favourite diplomat” and saying it was a proud moment to see a future diplomat engaging with the High Commissioner of Mauritius. That definitely put a massive grin on my face!
Meeting the High Commissioner
My friend Yana joined me, which made the experience even better. Inside the High Commission, I had the honour of meeting H.E. Mrs. Maria Francesca Mireille Martin, High Commissioner of the Republic of Mauritius to South Africa.
We shook hands in front of Mauritius’ vibrant flag—its bold red, blue, yellow, and green colours standing out with meaning. It felt electric—like a South African student connecting directly with someone representing an incredible island nation in the Indian Ocean.
A Leader with Humility
What truly stood out was how humble and approachable the High Commissioner was. With her impressive background as a former minister and journalist, she could easily have been formal and distant—but she wasn’t.
Instead, she was warm, down-to-earth, and made me feel completely at ease from the very beginning. That kind of authenticity is what stays with you and reflects what true diplomacy is all about.
An Eye-Opening Conversation
We sat down for a lively and engaging conversation. She shared fascinating insights about Mauritius—its breathtaking turquoise beaches, rich cultural diversity shaped by African, Indian, European, and Chinese influences, and its journey as one of Africa’s success stories in tourism, innovation, and economic development.
We also spoke about the strong relationship between Mauritius and South Africa, especially in trade, tourism, and collaboration within Southern African Development Community.
She also highlighted how small island nations like Mauritius are tackling major global challenges such as climate change and ocean conservation. It was eye-opening and really got me thinking.
Capturing the Moment
I took some great photos in front of the High Commission banner and vibrant displays showcasing Mauritius’ stunning lagoons, mountains, and cultural richness.
Standing there, I felt a deep sense of pride and excitement about the future and the possibilities ahead.
A Renewed Passion for Diplomacy
This visit reignited my passion for everything I love—languages, history, politics, and global affairs. It reminded me that diplomacy isn’t distant or rigid; it starts with curiosity, genuine conversations, and building bridges between people and nations.
South Africa and Mauritius may be separated by the Indian Ocean, but we share strong connections and have so much to learn from one another.
Looking Ahead
I left the High Commission feeling energised, inspired, and more determined than ever to pursue this path—whether it’s excelling in Model UN at Deutsche Internationale Schule Pretoria, learning new languages, or embracing every opportunity that comes my way.

Final Thoughts
Days like today remind me that the world is vast, yet more connected than we often realise. Sometimes, all it takes is the courage to show up and the willingness to learn from those already shaping the world.
I’m keeping my passion for diplomacy burning bright—and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.
