Shared Diplomatic Roots Strengthen South Africa–Uzbekistan Diplomats’ Engagement

Mr Muhammad Abdool, Counsellor: Political at the South African Embassy in Egypt, received a courtesy call on 10 March 2026 from Mr Otabek Alimov, Protocol and Media Officer at the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Egypt.

The meeting carried added significance, as both diplomats first crossed paths over a decade ago during a foreign diplomatic training programme in 2016. Their reunion in Cairo reflects how early professional connections can evolve into meaningful engagements within the global diplomatic arena.

Described as both cordial and reflective, the interaction highlighted the importance of sustained international relationships and the informal channels that often support formal diplomacy.

As South Africa and Uzbekistan continue to strengthen bilateral ties, such personal connections serve as a reminder that diplomacy is not only conducted through institutions, but also through the individuals who shape and maintain these relationships over time.
