South African Ambassador to Egypt, His Excellency NJ Mashimbye, met with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit at the organisation’s headquarters in Tahrir Square, Downtown Cairo, on 11 March.
The high-level discussions focused on pressing regional geopolitical developments and issues of shared interest between South Africa and the Arab world. Ambassador Mashimbye, supported by embassy colleagues Counsellor Political Mr Muhammad Abdool, Counsellor Political Mr Ashwin Maharaj, and First Secretary Political Mr Thabo Sanyane, emphasised South Africa’s commitment to multilateral dialogue and African-Arab cooperation.
Secretary General Aboul Gheit was accompanied by Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Hoosam Zaki and Cabinet Secretary Mr Omar Doughan. The meeting comes at a critical juncture, as the region grapples with ongoing conflicts, including recent condemnations of external aggressions highlighted in Arab League forums.
South Africa, under its foreign policy priorities of solidarity with the Global South, continues to advocate for peaceful resolutions and strengthened ties with Arab states. This encounter underscores the growing importance of Cairo as a hub for such exchanges, building on longstanding bilateral relations between Pretoria and the League.
The discussions reflect mutual interest in fostering stability, economic partnerships, and coordinated responses to common challenges in an increasingly volatile landscape.
