The Japanese Embassy hosted a warm reunion yesterday to celebrate the 29th anniversary of South Africa’s participation in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme.
Ambassador Shimizu Fumio praised the gathering, noting that alumni “continue to play a valuable role in bridging Japan and SA.” Former participants shared stories and renewed friendships forged during their time teaching and assisting in Japanese communities.
Since joining in 1997, hundreds of young South Africans have immersed themselves in Japanese schools and daily life through the government-sponsored programme. Many have returned to build careers in diplomacy, education, business and tourism, strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations.
The anniversary celebration underscores growing bilateral cooperation and the lasting impact of cultural exchange initiatives. Alumni say the experience remains a highlight of their professional journeys.
