On 4 March 2026, the Embassy of Venezuela in South Africa hosted a solemn ceremony at Freedom Park to mark the 13th anniversary of the passing of former President Hugo Chávez, fondly remembered by supporters as his “transition to immortality.”

The event commenced with a dignified wreath-laying ritual beside the plaque honouring Chávez on the Wall of Names, a site dedicated to global figures who advanced freedom, justice and human dignity. Ambassador Carlos Feo of Venezuela delivered heartfelt remarks reflecting on Chávez’s life as a dedicated leader who championed the well-being of ordinary people. He was joined by ambassadors from Cuba, Nicaragua, Palestine and the Sahrawi Republic, alongside Solly Mapaila, Secretary General of the South African Communist Party, and Nomvula Mokonyane, Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress. Each speaker highlighted aspects of Chávez’s character and lasting impact.

Chávez, who served as Venezuela’s president from 1999 until he died in 2013, is widely recognised for his focus on social inclusion and poverty reduction. During his tenure, extensive social programmes—known as “Misiones”—expanded access to education, healthcare and housing for millions, significantly lowering poverty and extreme poverty rates while improving literacy and school enrolment. He also promoted regional cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean, fostering solidarity through initiatives that emphasised mutual support and integration.

The ceremony underscored Chávez’s vision of equality and empowerment for the marginalised. Attendees paid tribute to a man whose commitment to uplifting the disadvantaged continues to inspire reflections on social progress and human solidarity across borders.
