Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola hosted a strategic Ministers’ Engagement with Resident Heads of Mission from the Africa Region at the OR Tambo Building on 2 March 2026.

The gathering reinforced South Africa’s dedication to continental unity and practical cooperation amid shared opportunities and challenges. The meeting, attended by envoys from various African nations—including representation from the Kenyan High Commission—reflected the enduring spirit of African solidarity, mutual respect, sovereignty, and shared prosperity. It aligned closely with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and South Africa’s broader foreign policy priorities for 2026, which emphasize people-centred development and economic diplomacy.

Reaffirming Commitment and Identifying Priorities

A core focus was reaffirming shared political commitment to strengthening bilateral ties through concrete, measurable actions. Delegates reviewed existing frameworks and explored ways to translate political goodwill into tangible outcomes, such as enhanced trade flows, joint infrastructure projects, and collaborative efforts in peace and security.

Participants actively identified priority areas for accelerated collaboration. Discussions highlighted sectors including sustainable development, energy transitions, digital economy integration, agriculture, health cooperation, and regional stability initiatives. These align with ongoing continental efforts to boost intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and address common threats like climate change and conflict resolution.

Building Robust Communication Channels

The engagement placed strong emphasis on establishing clear, effective channels of communication and coordination. By fostering greater transparency, mutual trust, and mechanisms for timely resolution of concerns, the meeting sought to prevent misunderstandings and enable proactive diplomacy.

“This platform embodies African unity and shared responsibility,” DIRCO noted, underscoring the importance of regular dialogue in advancing collective progress.
