From Mary Robinson to African Trailblazers: Pretoria Event Spotlights Women in Human Rights
The Embassy of Ireland in South Africa hosted a vibrant St. Brigid’s Day flagship event titled “Celebrating Women’s Leadership and Creativity in Advancing Human Rights” in Pretoria. Honouring Ireland’s patron saint St. Brigid—a symbol of courage, creativity, and advocacy—the programme spotlighted female trailblazers in human rights and leadership.
Ambassador Austin Gormley of Ireland and South Africa’s Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, delivered inspiring opening remarks. The event featured a screening of the acclaimed documentary Mrs. Robinson, chronicling the life of Mary Robinson, Ireland’s first female president, whose legacy spans groundbreaking leadership, human rights advocacy, and climate action.
A dynamic panel discussion followed, moderated by Muneinazvo Kujeke, Programme Manager at the Embassy. Panellists included UN Resident Coordinator for South Africa Nelson Muffuh, Irish human rights lawyer Noeline Blackwell, and African Union Youth Ambassador for Peace Cynthia Chigwenya. Discussions aligned with Ireland’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council and its upcoming EU Presidency in 2026, while celebrating African women advancing the Women, Peace & Security agenda.
The gathering underscored deepening Ireland-South Africa ties in promoting gender equality and global justice.
