Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Alvin Botes, co-chaired the 12th South Africa-Switzerland High-Level Consultations (HLC) with Mr Alexandre Fasel, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation’s OR Tambo Building in Pretoria.
The consultations served as a key platform to review bilateral cooperation, assess progress on existing commitments and explore opportunities to further strengthen relations between South Africa and Switzerland.
Focus on Bilateral Cooperation and Global Affairs
The meeting focused on reports from the various working groups established under the bilateral framework, as well as progress in implementing agreements signed during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State Visit to Switzerland in October 2025.
Discussions also covered current geopolitical developments and the importance of international cooperation in addressing shared global challenges, reaffirming both countries’ commitment to multilateralism and constructive dialogue.
Launch of South Africa-Switzerland Democracy Dialogue
A significant outcome of the engagement is the launch of a Democracy Dialogue between South Africa and Switzerland. The initiative is expected to provide a dedicated platform for exchanging experiences and best practices on democratic governance, institutional development and citizen participation.
The dialogue reflects the shared values and commitment of both countries to promoting democracy, good governance and inclusive development.
Growing Momentum in Bilateral Relations
Relations between South Africa and Switzerland have strengthened considerably since the previous High-Level Consultations. This progress has been marked by several important milestones, including President Ramaphosa’s State Visit to Switzerland and the signing of multiple agreements aimed at expanding cooperation across various sectors.
The partnership has also been reinforced by South Africa’s growing role on the regional and global stage, including its assumption of the interim chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in November 2025 and the successful hosting of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg later that month.
Strengthening a Strategic Partnership
The 12th South Africa-Switzerland High-Level Consultations underscored the strong and enduring partnership between the two countries. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in areas of mutual interest, advancing sustainable development and contributing to regional and global stability.
As South Africa and Switzerland continue to expand their engagement, the outcomes of the consultations are expected to further strengthen diplomatic ties and create new opportunities for collaboration in the years ahead.
