The Republic of Cameroon commemorated its National Day in South Africa with a prestigious diplomatic celebration that highlighted unity, bilateral cooperation, diaspora excellence and Cameroonian culture.

Hosted by the High Commission of Cameroon in South Africa, the event brought together ambassadors, high commissioners, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the South African government, business leaders, academics, members of the Cameroonian diaspora and distinguished guests.

The celebration reflected the enduring relations between Cameroon and South Africa while also honouring the achievements of Cameroonians residing in South Africa who have contributed significantly to academia, research, leadership and development.

High Commissioner Welcomes Guests to National Day Celebration

Guests were welcomed on the red carpet by Solomon Azoh-Mbi against a National Day backdrop as diplomats, officials and members of the Cameroonian community gathered to commemorate Cameroon’s unity and nation-building journey.

Among the distinguished guests was Siphokazi Ndudane, who attended on behalf of Nomakhosazana Meth.

The ceremony officially commenced with the singing of the national anthems of Cameroon and South Africa, symbolising the friendship and diplomatic relations between the two African nations.

Cameroon Honours Distinguished Citizens Living in South Africa

A major highlight of the evening was the conferring of honorary distinctions on distinguished Cameroonians residing in South Africa on behalf of Paul Biya.

Acting in the name of the President, High Commissioner Solomon Azoh-Mbi bestowed the honours in recognition of exceptional contributions in academia, leadership, research, business and community development.

Following the awarding ceremony, Cameroonian poet Ndingi Sam Junior delivered a poetry citation in honour of the recipients, adding a cultural and emotional tribute to the recognition ceremony.

The recognition segment underscored Cameroon’s appreciation for the role played by its diaspora in advancing education, innovation, research and national development beyond its borders.

The recognition of leading academics further reflected Cameroon’s growing reputation in scientific research and higher education across the African continent.

High Commissioner Highlights Cameroon’s Unity and Diplomatic Resurgence

Delivering his keynote address, High Commissioner Solomon Azoh-Mbi reflected on the significance of Cameroon’s National Day and the country’s historic nation-building process.

He outlined Cameroon’s complex colonial history and emphasised the importance of the 1972 referendum that established a united state built on bilingualism, biculturalism and national cohesion.

The High Commissioner described Cameroon as a nation that has remained resilient despite historical and contemporary challenges, stating that the country continues to promote dialogue, democratic governance, peace and inclusive development.

He further highlighted the growing pride among young Cameroonians who increasingly refer to Cameroon as “The Continent” due to its vast cultural, ecological and linguistic diversity.

Addressing recent political developments, the High Commissioner referenced Cameroon’s 2025 presidential elections and ongoing institutional developments aimed at strengthening governance and political stability.

On the diplomatic front, he highlighted Cameroon’s hosting of the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization in Yaoundé, which attracted thousands of delegates from around the world, as well as the historic apostolic visit by Pope Leo XIV to Cameroon.

The High Commissioner also reiterated Cameroon’s call for peaceful conflict resolution globally through diplomacy and dialogue while reaffirming support for the role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security.

Economically, he noted Cameroon’s resilience amid global geopolitical uncertainties and referenced positive assessments from international financial institutions regarding the country’s medium-term economic outlook.

South Africa Reaffirms Strong Bilateral Relations with Cameroon

Remarks by South African government representative Siphokazi Ndudane followed the High Commissioner’s address and focused on the strong and longstanding relations between the two countries.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Employment and Labour, she congratulated Cameroon on its National Day and extended congratulations to President Paul Biya following the 2025 presidential elections.

She reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Cameroon and highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership in advancing continental development.

Ndudane also reflected on her personal experiences in Cameroon, recalling time spent in Limbe, Douala and Yaoundé during her years as a young researcher, describing Cameroon as vibrant, welcoming and culturally rich.

She praised Cameroon’s role as a strategic economic gateway in Central Africa and highlighted several projects involving South African companies, including mining, industrialisation and beneficiation initiatives.

The address also underscored the importance of African solidarity, peacebuilding and cooperation under the framework of the African Union Agenda 2063 and the “Silencing the Guns” initiative.

She additionally commended Cameroon’s academic excellence and paid tribute to renowned Cameroonian scholars and researchers who have contributed to scientific advancement across the continent.

Celebration of Cameroonian Culture and Cuisine

Following the official programme, guests enjoyed an evening of Cameroonian cultural entertainment, networking and traditional cuisine.

The celebration featured vibrant Cameroonian hospitality, music and culinary experiences prepared by the chef, allowing guests to experience the richness and diversity of Cameroon’s cultural heritage.
