South Africa and Algeria Review Bilateral Relations at Senior Officials Meeting in Algiers

South Africa and Algeria have continued their diplomatic engagement through a Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) Midterm Review in Algiers, aimed at reviewing bilateral relations and advancing cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr Nyameko Goso, Acting Deputy Director-General: Africa at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), and Mr Chebihi Boualem, Director-General for Africa in Algeria.

The engagement reflects the continued commitment of both countries to maintaining strong diplomatic relations and providing a platform for dialogue on matters of mutual interest.

Strengthening South Africa–Algeria Bilateral Relations

The Senior Officials Meeting Midterm Review forms part of the ongoing diplomatic consultations between South Africa and Algeria. These engagements provide an opportunity for both governments to assess their bilateral relationship, review progress and consider areas requiring continued attention.

South Africa and Algeria share longstanding diplomatic ties and a common interest in advancing cooperation on African continental priorities. Their relationship has included high-level political engagements, bilateral consultations and cooperation within multilateral institutions.

The two countries have previously used bilateral mechanisms, including the Bi-National Commission, to advance political dialogue, economic cooperation and collaboration across areas of mutual interest. The December 2024 State Visit by President Cyril Ramaphosa to Algeria further underscored the strategic importance of the relationship.

DIRCO Leads South Africa’s Engagement

Mr Nyameko Goso, Acting Deputy Director-General: Africa at DIRCO, co-chaired the South African delegation’s engagement with the Algerian delegation, led by Mr Chebihi Boualem.

The meeting provided a formal platform for senior officials from both countries to engage on the state of bilateral relations and the progress of cooperation.

Senior officials’ consultations are an important component of South Africa’s diplomatic engagement framework, supporting communication between governments and helping maintain momentum in bilateral relations.

Advancing Cooperation Through Diplomatic Dialogue

The midterm review highlights the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement in strengthening partnerships between African countries. Through regular consultations, South Africa and Algeria can continue to assess their bilateral relationship, identify opportunities for collaboration and address matters requiring further engagement.

The meeting also reinforces the value of institutional mechanisms in maintaining continuity in diplomatic relations and supporting the implementation of bilateral commitments.

As African countries pursue deeper regional integration, stronger economic partnerships and coordinated responses to shared challenges, engagements of this nature remain important to advancing the continent’s broader development and cooperation agenda.

South Africa and Algeria: A Continuing Strategic Partnership

South Africa’s relations with Algeria form part of its broader commitment to strengthening African partnerships and promoting cooperation on issues of regional and international importance.

The Senior Officials Meeting Midterm Review in Algiers represents another engagement within this longstanding relationship, providing an opportunity for both countries to maintain diplomatic dialogue and review progress in their bilateral cooperation.
