South Africa Reaffirms Support for African Union as Ambassador Nonceba Losi Meets AU Chairperson

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has met with H.E. Nonceba Losi, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, to discuss matters of mutual interest and South Africa’s continued support for the continental organisation.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of South Africa’s engagement with the African Union and its contribution to advancing continental priorities, institutional development and cooperation among African states.

South Africa Reaffirms Support for the African Union

During the engagement, Ambassador Losi expressed appreciation for the AU Chairperson’s recent interaction with members of the African Union Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) from the Southern Region.

She commended the candid exchange of views and the briefings provided on the African Union’s priority areas and institutional reform process. Ambassador Losi also acknowledged Chairperson Youssouf’s leadership and advocacy on behalf of the African continent at international forums, including the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81).

These engagements underscore the importance of sustained dialogue between the African Union Commission and its member states in strengthening continental cooperation and advancing shared priorities.

Digital Archives and Institutional Development

Chairperson Youssouf conveyed his appreciation to the Government of the Republic of South Africa for its continued support for the African Union, including its contribution to the digitisation of the Union’s archives.

The initiative plays an important role in preserving the African Union’s institutional memory and strengthening its information management systems. Digitising historical records supports the preservation of institutional knowledge and improves access to important organisational information.

South Africa’s contribution reflects its ongoing engagement in initiatives aimed at strengthening the African Union’s institutional capacity and supporting the effective functioning of continental structures.

African Union to Print New Maps of Africa

Chairperson Youssouf also informed Ambassador Losi that the African Union would begin printing new maps of Africa following a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.

The development forms part of the broader engagement surrounding the representation of Africa and the implementation of the relevant UNGA resolution.

Advancing Africa’s Continental Priorities

The meeting highlights the continued importance of diplomatic engagement between South Africa and the African Union Commission in advancing Africa’s collective interests.

Through its engagement with continental institutions, South Africa continues to support dialogue on institutional reform, knowledge preservation and the strengthening of the African Union’s capacity to deliver on its mandate.

The discussions between Chairperson Youssouf and Ambassador Losi reflect the value of sustained cooperation in promoting a stronger, more integrated and effective African Union.
