Ambassador Kristiansen Marks Milestone as Norfund Expands Operations in South Africa

On 18 May 2026, Anne Beathe Kristiansen joined the official opening of Norfund’s new office in Johannesburg, marking another important milestone in Norway’s growing economic and development partnership with South Africa and the African continent.

The opening represents a strategic expansion for Norfund, Norway’s development finance institution dedicated to investing in sustainable businesses and projects that create jobs, promote economic growth and support long-term development across emerging markets.

From Cape Town to Johannesburg

Ambassador Kristiansen reflected on the significance of the occasion, noting the continuity of Norway’s support for Norfund’s mission over the years.

In 2020, she officially opened Norfund’s Cape Town office while serving as Norway’s Minister of International Development. Six years later, now in her role as Ambassador, she once again joined the institution at a defining moment — this time for the launch of its Johannesburg office.

“Different roles, same pride in Norfund’s achievements,” she remarked, highlighting the institution’s continued impact and expansion in Africa.

Strengthening Norway–South Africa Economic Relations

The establishment of the Johannesburg office underscores Norfund’s commitment to deepening its presence in one of Africa’s leading economic hubs. Johannesburg remains a key gateway for investment, infrastructure development and financial partnerships across Southern Africa.

Norfund has played an increasingly important role in supporting renewable energy, financial inclusion, agribusiness and sustainable industrial development throughout Africa. Its investments are aimed at generating both financial returns and measurable social impact.

The expansion also reflects the broader strengthening of ties between Norway and South Africa, particularly in areas related to green energy transition, sustainable investment and inclusive economic development.

Norfund’s Growing Presence in Africa

Over the years, Norfund has established itself as a major development finance institution working to mobilise capital in regions where access to investment remains limited. The organisation partners with private sector actors to support businesses capable of creating employment opportunities and contributing to local economic resilience.

The Johannesburg office is expected to enhance Norfund’s engagement with partners, investors and businesses across South Africa and the wider region, positioning the institution closer to key markets and opportunities on the continent.

A Symbol of Long-Term Partnership

The launch of the new office not only marks institutional growth for Norfund but also symbolises Norway’s long-term commitment to sustainable development and economic cooperation in Africa.

For Ambassador Kristiansen, the occasion represented both continuity and progress — reflecting a partnership that has evolved over time while remaining firmly focused on development, investment and shared prosperity.
