The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Maxamed Ali Nadaar, conducted an official visit to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Pretoria, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic services and engagement with the Somali diaspora.
The visit forms part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government of Somalia to enhance the effectiveness of its missions abroad and ensure that embassies are adequately equipped to meet the growing needs of Somali citizens living overseas.
Inspection of Upgraded Embassy Facilities
During the visit, Deputy Minister Nadaar toured the embassy premises, inspecting various departments and facilities that have recently undergone upgrades. The improvements are aimed at expanding operational capacity and enhancing service delivery for the Somali community in South Africa.
He observed the progress made in modernising the embassy’s infrastructure, noting that the upgrades reflect a broader commitment to professionalising diplomatic missions and improving accessibility for citizens seeking consular and administrative services.
Engagement with Embassy Leadership
The Deputy Minister was received by senior embassy officials, including the Deputy Ambassador, Ismail Cabdulle Soomane, who welcomed the delegation and provided a detailed overview of the embassy’s structure, functions, and ongoing initiatives.
Discussions focused on the embassy’s role in supporting the Somali diaspora, facilitating bilateral relations, and advancing Somalia’s diplomatic priorities in South Africa. Officials highlighted key programmes designed to assist Somali nationals, promote trade and cooperation, and strengthen people-to-people ties.
Commitment to Diaspora and Diplomatic Services
Deputy Minister Nadaar commended the embassy staff for their dedication and progress, emphasising the importance of efficient diplomatic services. He underscored that embassies play a critical role not only in representing national interests but also in providing essential support to citizens abroad.
He further stressed that strengthening diaspora engagement remains a priority for the Somali government, particularly in countries like South Africa, which host a significant Somali community.
Delegation and Diplomatic Presence
The Deputy Minister was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Ibrahim Guure Mohamed, Director of the Somali Diaspora Department, and Abdisalam Yusuf Adan, Advisor within the same department.
Also present were key members of the embassy’s diplomatic staff, including First Advisor Siraaji Fariid and Second Advisor Yasin Cali Araale, alongside other officials contributing to the mission’s daily operations.
Strengthening Somalia–South Africa Relations
The visit highlights the continued strengthening of diplomatic relations between Somalia and South Africa, with a focus on cooperation, diaspora engagement, and institutional development. It also signals the Somali government’s broader strategy to ensure that its embassies remain responsive, modern, and aligned with international diplomatic standards.
