Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Thandi Moraka, is representing South Africa at the CELAC–Africa High-Level Forum currently underway in Bogotá, Colombia. The forum, held from 18–21 March 2026, brings together leaders and policymakers from Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean to deepen political, economic and cultural cooperation.
Moraka’s participation underscores South Africa’s commitment to strengthening South–South cooperation and advancing shared development priorities between the two regions.
Engaging Small Businesses and Trade
On the sidelines of the forum, Moraka visited exhibitions at the Ágora Bogotá Centro de Convenciones, where small and medium enterprises (SMEs) showcased a range of locally produced goods and innovations.
Her engagement with exhibitors highlighted the importance of SMEs in driving inclusive economic growth and fostering cross-continental trade. Observers noted that such interactions are key to unlocking new partnerships between African and Latin American businesses, particularly in sectors such as agro-processing, technology and manufacturing.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
In a significant bilateral engagement on 20 March, Moraka met with Martin Clavijo, Director of the Uruguayan Agency for International Cooperation (AUCI).
AUCI, a decentralised body under the Presidency of Uruguay, plays a central role in planning and coordinating international cooperation initiatives. Discussions focused on expanding collaboration in development programmes, knowledge exchange and technical cooperation between South Africa and Uruguay.
The meeting signals Pretoria’s intent to deepen bilateral ties with Latin American partners beyond multilateral platforms.
Delivering South Africa’s Message
Moraka also delivered remarks at the high-level forum, reaffirming South Africa’s commitment to multilateralism, solidarity and sustainable development. During the Heads of State segment, she presented South Africa’s country statement, emphasising the need for stronger economic integration, climate cooperation and equitable global governance.
Her address called for practical outcomes from the forum, including enhanced trade flows, investment opportunities and collaborative development projects.
A Platform for Global South Solidarity
The CELAC–Africa High-Level Forum continues to serve as a strategic platform for fostering unity among developing nations. South Africa’s active participation, led by Moraka, reflects a broader diplomatic push to strengthen alliances across the Global South and position the country as a key bridge between Africa and Latin America.
