Egyptian Ambassador to South Africa Ahmad Sharief held a high-level meeting with Ambassador Xolisa Mabhongo, Deputy Director-General for Global Governance and the Continental Agenda at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) in Pretoria.

During the cordial discussion, Ambassador Sharief extended warm congratulations to the South African government on its recent election to the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC). South Africa secured a two-year term on the PSC, effective from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2028, following its election alongside Lesotho to represent the Southern region during the 38th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Addis Ababa earlier this year.

The meeting offered a valuable platform for both sides to exchange perspectives on strengthening bilateral coordination on pressing regional and international matters. Discussions focused particularly on peace and security challenges across the African continent, emphasising enhanced collaboration within key multilateral frameworks, including the African Union.

Ambassadors Sharief and Mabhongo also explored opportunities for closer alignment under BRICS, where both Egypt and South Africa are active members as sisterly African nations committed to advancing shared priorities in global governance and continental stability.

The engagement underscores the enduring diplomatic ties between Cairo and Pretoria, rooted in mutual respect and a common vision for a peaceful, prosperous Africa. Officials from both sides described the talks as constructive, signalling continued momentum in Egypt-South Africa relations amid evolving continental dynamics.
