South Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to multilateral cooperation and sustainable development following a high-level engagement between the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT).
Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Alvin Botes addressed the UN Country Team’s annual retreat, where discussions centred on the evolving global landscape and its implications for multilateralism at country level. The engagement brought together senior UN officials and government representatives to align priorities and strengthen collaboration.
In his remarks, Botes underscored the importance of partnerships between South Africa and the United Nations in addressing pressing challenges, including inequality, development financing, and peacebuilding. He highlighted the need for coordinated responses that are both inclusive and responsive to national priorities.
United Nations Resident Coordinator Nelson Muffuh echoed these sentiments, emphasising the UN’s continued commitment to supporting South Africa’s development agenda. He noted that collaboration with government remains central to delivering impactful programmes that advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The engagement also provided a platform to reflect on the broader role of multilateral institutions in a shifting global environment. Participants acknowledged that strengthening country-level cooperation is essential to ensuring that global frameworks translate into tangible outcomes for communities.
