Representatives from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) met with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) South Africa office on March 5, 2026.
The discussions, held at TIKA’s Pretoria headquarters, focused on potential collaborations to enhance preparedness for disease outbreaks, with a particular emphasis on cholera, which has plagued parts of southern Africa in recent years.
Led by WHO Representative Ms. Shenaaz El-Halabi, the delegation engaged in productive talks with TIKA officials, exploring joint projects to improve health infrastructure and response mechanisms. The meeting underscored shared commitment to global health security, highlighting Turkey’s ongoing development aid in Africa.
The initiative comes amid rising concerns over cholera surges in neighboring countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe, where poor sanitation and climate factors exacerbate risks. Experts warn that coordinated international efforts are crucial to prevent cross-border spread. TIKA, known for its humanitarian projects across the continent, has previously supported water and sanitation programs in South Africa.
This partnership could pave the way for new funding and technical support, fostering stronger Turkey-South Africa relations in the health sector. As outbreaks evolve, such diplomatic engagements offer hope for proactive solutions in vulnerable regions.
