Sweden’s Diana Janse Witnesses Impact of Swedish Investment in Cape Town Township
Swedish State Secretary Diana Janse, accompanied by Sweden’s Ambassador to South Africa H.E. Anna Karin Eneström, recently visited Bitprop’s innovative housing project in Langa Township, Cape Town. The visit highlighted how Swedish investment and entrepreneurship are driving inclusive growth and sustainable development in South Africa’s townships.
Bitprop, a Swedish-backed startup, partners with local homeowners to construct affordable micro-flats on their properties at no upfront cost to the owners. Bitprop handles financing, construction, and management, enabling residents to generate rental income while addressing the country’s severe housing shortage. In Langa, one of Cape Town’s oldest townships, the model has created safe, modern rental units for young professionals and families, transforming backyard spaces into sources of economic empowerment.
Janse praised the initiative as a prime example of private-sector innovation fostering social impact. “Swedish entrepreneurship is proving to be a force for good,” she noted during the tour, emphasizing sustainable urban solutions and community upliftment.
The engagement underscores strengthening Sweden-South Africa ties through impact investing in housing and entrepreneurship.
