Ahmadu Meets Nyhontso: Advancing Sustainable Rural Development in SA
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative in South Africa, Dr. Babagana Ahmadu, held productive discussions yesterday with Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso of Land Reform and Rural Development.
The meeting, held on 11 February, centred on deepening collaboration to promote rural development across the country. Key focus areas included empowering smallholder farmers through targeted support, enhancing access to resources, and building resilient, sustainable livelihoods in rural communities.
Dr. Ahmadu emphasised FAO’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with the South African government to address food security challenges, boost agricultural productivity, and foster inclusive growth. Minister Nyhontso welcomed the partnership, highlighting its alignment with national priorities for equitable land reform and rural revitalisation.
This engagement underscores the growing synergy between the United Nations agency and South Africa’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in tackling poverty, climate vulnerabilities, and inequality in farming areas. Both parties expressed optimism for concrete outcomes to benefit small-scale producers nationwide.
