Pyrotechnics and Prosperity: Singapore Hosts Vibrant Chinese New Year Celebration
Singapore’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Zainal Arif Mantaha, together with his wife Ms Jennifer Chang, hosted a vibrant Lo Hei ceremony on 5 February 2026 to celebrate Chinese New Year and welcome the incoming Year of the Horse.
The traditional prosperity toss, a hallmark of Lunar New Year festivities among Chinese communities, saw enthusiastic participation from attendees tossing ingredients skyward while shouting auspicious wishes for wealth, health, and success in the coming year.
The event, held at the High Commissioner’s residence, drew distinguished guests including DIRCO Deputy Minister Alvin Botes, DPME Deputy Minister Seiso Joel Mohai, DSTI Deputy Minister Nomalungelo Gina, alongside other senior officials, diplomats, and community leaders. The gathering highlighted strong diplomatic ties between Singapore and South Africa.
Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, a spectacular pyrotechnic display lit up the evening, complemented by lively cultural performances featuring traditional music and dance.
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, marks the beginning of the new lunar calendar year and is the most important traditional holiday for Chinese people worldwide. It symbolises renewal, family reunions, and the expulsion of misfortune. The Year of the Horse (specifically the Fire Horse in 2026, starting formally on 17 February) embodies energy, freedom, independence, and swift progress, promising a dynamic period of adventure and opportunity.
