Ambassador Shaw Serves Up Peruvian Pride at Championship Breakfast
Ambassador Jose Javier Augusto Shaw of Peru to South Africa hosted a vibrant Peruvian Breakfast at his official residence yesterday, bringing together diplomats, friends of Peru, and local guests to savour the nation’s acclaimed culinary heritage.
The event doubled as a joyful celebration of Peru’s recent title as World Breakfast Champion, earned when the traditional dish pan con chicharrón triumphed in a viral global contest organised by Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos in September 2025. In a nail-biting final, Peru’s hearty sandwich of crispy fried pork, sweet potato, salsa criolla, and fresh bread narrowly defeated Venezuela’s arepa, securing victory with approximately 12.8 million votes from fans worldwide.
Ambassador Shaw, joined by his spouse Mrs Olga Zakharova, welcomed attendees to enjoy authentic pan con chicharrón and other Peruvian morning delights. He highlighted how food acts as a cultural bridge, fostering connections between nations and showcasing Peru’s renowned gastronomy.
The gathering underscored Peru’s growing soft power through cuisine, following widespread national pride in the win that prompted official recognitions, including a dedicated national day for the dish.
