Deputy Minister Tshabalala Represents SA at Kuwait’s Historic Anniversary Event
Kuwait’s Ambassador to South Africa, His Excellency Mr. Salem Rashed Al-Shebli, hosted a vibrant reception on 5 February 2026 to commemorate the 65th National Day and the 35th Liberation Day of the State of Kuwait.
The event, held at the Kuwaiti Embassy, drew a distinguished gathering including Deputy Minister Judith Nemadzinga-Tshabalala of Employment and Labour, who represented the South African Government. Among the notable attendees were former Minister Dr Naledi Pandor, members of the diplomatic corps, and other esteemed guests.
Kuwait’s National Day, observed annually on 25 February, marks the ascension of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah to the throne in 1950. His visionary leadership paved the way for Kuwait’s independence from British protectorate status in 1961, the establishment of its constitution, and the foundation of the modern Kuwaiti state—symbolizing sovereignty, progress, and national unity.
Liberation Day, celebrated on 26 February, commemorates the liberation of Kuwait from Iraqi occupation on 26 February 1991, following the Gulf War. Coalition forces, including international support, ended the seven-month invasion, restoring Kuwaiti sovereignty and highlighting resilience against aggression.
The dual celebration underscored Kuwait’s enduring spirit of independence and renewal, while reinforcing strong bilateral ties between Kuwait and South Africa through shared values of cooperation and mutual respect.
