Tanaka-Ramaphosa Meeting Signals Deeper Japan-South Africa Partnership
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Akihiko Tanaka paid a courtesy call on President Cyril Ramaphosa, accompanied by Japan’s Ambassador to South Africa, Fumio Shimizu. President Ramaphosa expressed gratitude for JICA’s ongoing support in South Africa, as outlined by Mr. Tanaka during the meeting.
The leaders discussed critical challenges facing the nation, including unemployment, poverty, inequality, and the need for capacity building in state and local institutions. Mr. Tanaka also engaged with key government figures, meeting International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola, as well as Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. In discussions with Minister Godongwana, Mr. Tanaka highlighted JICA’s recent financing contributions to the Financial Regulation Bank’s fund for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), while exploring avenues for expanded future collaboration.
The engagements underscore Japan’s commitment to supporting South Africa’s development priorities through technical and financial assistance.
