Ela Gandhi Leads Commemoration as “Why Gandhi Still Matters” Opens in Durban

The Indian Consulate General in Durban joined forces with the Phoenix Settlement Trust and the Gandhi Development Trust to solemnly commemorate Martyrs’ Day in Durban, honouring Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination anniversary and the sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters.
The event featured distinguished guests, including the Hon. Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, the Hon. Deputy Mayor of the eThekwini Municipality, and Smt. Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of the Mahatma. They delivered insightful addresses on the enduring relevance of Gandhian principles—non-violence, truth, and social justice—in addressing contemporary global challenges.
A highlight was the inauguration of the exhibition “Why Gandhi Still Matters”, which explored the Mahatma’s legacy through compelling displays. Dignitaries also viewed the poignant photo exhibition of #VandeMataram, applauding its powerful reminder of India’s historic struggle for independence.
The gathering underscored the deep India-South Africa ties forged in Gandhi’s early activism.
