South Africa and Norway reaffirmed their strong bilateral ties during a high-level meeting in Pretoria on 28 November 2026. Ambassador Dave Malcomson, Chief Director for Economic and Social Development at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, met with Ms Stine Renate Håheim, Norwegian State Secretary for International Development.
The discussions highlighted ongoing technical cooperation in key sectors including science and technology, the oceans economy, maritime security, energy, environment, education and skills development, peace and security, and human rights. Norway maintains a significant investment presence in South Africa’s renewable energy sector, underscoring mutual interests in sustainable development.
Bilateral relations are guided by annual High-level Consultations (HLC) co-chaired by the two countries’ Foreign Ministers, with the next session set for 2026. The meeting also reflected on Norway’s role as a Guest Country during South Africa’s 2025 G20 Presidency, when Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre participated in the Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg.
