South Africa Pitches Strong Case for AU Peace and Security Council Seat

South Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to continental peace and security by presenting its candidature for a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) for the 2026–2028 term.
On 27 January 2026, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) hosted a dedicated briefing for African Heads of Mission in Pretoria. The event showcased South Africa’s extensive experience and contributions to stability across the continent.
Ms Mapeete Kouame, Deputy Director of the National Office for the Coordination of Peace Missions (NOCPM), opened proceedings by welcoming delegates. Dr Phakamisa Siyothula, NOCPM Director and Programme Director, expressed gratitude to attending African representatives for their engagement.
Ambassador Dave Malcomson, Chief Director: Global Governance and Continental Agenda, delivered the core presentation on behalf of Ambassador Xolisa Mabhongo. He outlined South Africa’s longstanding peace efforts, key achievements in conflict resolution, and priority areas for the upcoming term.
Ambassador Xolisa Makaya, former Permanent Representative to the AU, Ethiopia, and Djibouti, highlighted South Africa’s prior successful service on the PSC.
