Boosting Access and Investment: SA, Switzerland Revive EFTA-SACU Agreement

Switzerland and South Africa have begun advancing discussions to modernise the EFTA–SACU Free Trade Agreement, following a joint statement signed during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent state visit. The talks signal renewed momentum in strengthening economic ties between the two countries and the wider Southern African Customs Union (SACU) region.
Officials indicated that the modernisation process will prioritise improved market access for goods and services, addressing contemporary trade barriers and aligning the agreement with current global standards. Increased investment flows are also a key focus, with both sides seeking to create a more predictable and attractive environment for businesses.
The updated framework is expected to support value-added trade, promote sustainable development, and enhance cooperation in areas such as innovation and technology. For South Africa, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to expand export opportunities and attract foreign direct investment, while Switzerland aims to deepen its economic engagement with one of Africa’s most industrialised economies.
