The Ambassador-designate of the Republic of South Africa to the Arab Republic of Egypt, H.E. Ambassador Jomo Nyambi, received a courtesy call from the newly appointed Ambassador-designate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Egypt, H.E. Ambassador Ahmed Mohammed Monguno, at the South African Embassy in Cairo.

The meeting, held on 2 September 2026, provided an opportunity for the two Ambassadors-designate to engage on matters relating to South Africa–Nigeria bilateral relations and areas of mutual interest.

Discussing Bilateral Relations

During the meeting, Ambassador Nyambi and Ambassador Monguno exchanged views on issues relevant to the relationship between South Africa and Nigeria.

As two of Africa’s leading countries, South Africa and Nigeria maintain longstanding diplomatic relations and engage on a range of political, economic and continental matters. Continued interaction between their diplomatic representatives contributes to strengthening communication and cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting in Cairo also provided an opportunity for the two incoming diplomatic representatives to establish contact and discuss shared priorities as they prepare to undertake their respective ambassadorial responsibilities in Egypt.

Advancing the African Agenda

A key focus of the discussions was the advancement of the African Agenda, reflecting the shared importance of cooperation between South Africa and Nigeria on matters affecting the continent.

Both countries play significant roles in continental affairs and have historically contributed to discussions on Africa’s development, peace and security, economic integration and the strengthening of African institutions.

Engagement between South Africa and Nigeria therefore provides an important platform for exchanging perspectives and identifying areas where the two countries can work together in support of common African priorities.
