Austrian Embassy in Pretoria enters a new chapter with new arrivals and farewells
The Austrian Embassy in Pretoria is undergoing a period of transition as it welcomes new members to its diplomatic team while bidding farewell to colleagues who have served in South Africa.
Austrian Ambassador to South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe, Romana Königsbrun, shared the update on LinkedIn, describing it as a “farewell & welcome season” at the Austrian Embassy Pretoria.
The Ambassador welcomed Rainer Sulzberger as the embassy’s new Consul and Martin Tomov as its new Attaché, alongside their families. She also expressed appreciation to outgoing Consul Florian Brandl and Elisabeth Tegischer for their service and contribution to the mission.
Rainer Sulzberger joins the Austrian Embassy Pretoria
Rainer Sulzberger has joined the Austrian diplomatic team in Pretoria as Consul.
His arrival comes as the embassy continues to strengthen its consular operations and engagement with Austrian citizens, visitors and partners in South Africa.
Sulzberger has previously served within Austria’s diplomatic service, including at Austria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, where he has been listed as Counsellor for Administrative Affairs and Head of Administration.
His experience in diplomatic administration and consular affairs adds further depth to the Austrian mission in Pretoria.
Martin Tomov joins as new Attaché
The embassy has also welcomed Martin Tomov as its new Attaché.
While Ambassador Königsbrun’s announcement did not provide further details about Tomov’s portfolio, his arrival forms part of the latest staffing changes at the Austrian Embassy Pretoria.
The arrival of new diplomatic personnel is an important part of maintaining continuity in a foreign mission, bringing new expertise and perspectives while ensuring that established relationships and programmes continue.
Farewell to Florian Brandl
The Austrian Embassy is also bidding farewell to Consul Florian Brandl, who was recognised by Ambassador Königsbrun for his “extraordinary dedication” during his service.
Brandl has previously held consular responsibilities for Austria in other diplomatic postings. His departure marks the end of his current chapter with the Austrian mission in South Africa.
Ambassador Königsbrun thanked him for his commitment and contribution to the work of the embassy.
Elisabeth Tegischer also farewelled
The Ambassador also paid tribute to Elisabeth Tegischer, describing her as someone whose “long-standing tireless spirit” would be dearly missed.
Her farewell reflects the wider changes taking place within the embassy team as experienced personnel move on and new officials take up their assignments.
Diplomatic missions regularly undergo such rotations as governments deploy officials to different countries and posts, ensuring the continued development of international relations.
Austria and South Africa maintain longstanding diplomatic relations
The staffing changes come against the backdrop of established relations between Austria and South Africa.
According to South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, bilateral relations between the two countries have been cordial since 1994. The South Africa-Austria Bilateral Consultations Mechanism serves as an important platform for advancing bilateral engagement.
Ambassador Romana Königsbrun has headed Austria’s diplomatic representation in Pretoria since September 2022. Her accreditation covers South Africa and several countries across Southern Africa, including Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe, with Madagascar also included in her diplomatic responsibilities.
