The Embassy of Ireland in Pretoria hosted a send-off reception for South African students selected for the 2026/27 Ireland Fellows Programme, bringing together the outgoing fellows, government representatives, programme partners and members of the Irish community.
The reception celebrated the students as they prepare to begin their studies in Ireland and highlighted the importance of education, skills development and people-to-people links in strengthening relations between Ireland and South Africa.
The event was attended by representatives from the Embassy of Ireland, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Irish Aid and the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS), alongside members of the Irish community.
Supporting Future Leaders Through Education
The Ireland Fellows Programme provides talented professionals with an opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in Ireland while developing skills that can contribute to sustainable development in their home countries.
The programme is designed to support emerging leaders and strengthen professional and institutional networks between Ireland and participating countries. Previous programme information from Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs describes the fellowship as a fully funded opportunity covering tuition fees, travel, accommodation and living costs for eligible master’s-level studies.
For South Africa, the programme forms part of Ireland’s broader engagement in education, skills development, research and institutional cooperation. The Embassy has identified the fellowship programme and the development of alumni networks as important components of its education and skills portfolio.
Strengthening Ireland–South Africa Relations
The send-off reception also reflected the wider relationship between Ireland and South Africa, with education serving as an important platform for cooperation.
Through opportunities for South African professionals to study in Ireland, the programme contributes to knowledge exchange, professional development and the creation of long-term networks between institutions and individuals in both countries.
The Embassy of Ireland in Pretoria represents Ireland’s interests in South Africa and is also accredited to several countries in the region, including Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Lesotho and Botswana, as well as the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The Embassy works alongside other Irish government agencies and partners in the region as part of Team Ireland, supporting cooperation across areas including trade, investment, education, skills and development.
