Vietnam’s newly appointed Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of South Africa, H.E. Nguyen Trong Kien, has arrived in South Africa, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Vietnam’s diplomatic engagement with the country and the wider Southern African region.
Upon his arrival, Ambassador-Designate Nguyen Trong Kien was warmly welcomed by fellow ASEAN ambassadors and diplomatic colleagues serving in South Africa, reflecting the close bonds and spirit of cooperation that characterise the ASEAN diplomatic community.
His arrival comes as Vietnam continues to strengthen its engagement with South Africa, an important partner on the African continent and a key actor in regional and multilateral affairs.
Experienced Vietnamese Diplomat Takes Up New Assignment
Ambassador-Designate Nguyen Trong Kien brings extensive experience in international relations, diplomacy and Southeast Asian affairs to his new posting.
According to his official biography from the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he currently serves as Deputy Director-General of the Department of Southeast Asia–South Asia–South Pacific Affairs. He was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Republic of South Africa, with concurrent accreditation to Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini.
His diplomatic career spans more than three decades and includes assignments within Vietnam’s foreign policy institutions as well as an overseas posting at the Embassy of Vietnam in India.
He served as a Second Secretary at the Embassy of Vietnam in India from 2007 to 2010 and subsequently held a number of senior positions within Vietnam’s external relations structures, including Deputy Director-General and Director-General responsibilities.
From July 2021 to February 2025, he served as Director-General of the Department of Southeast Asia–South Pacific Affairs at the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Commission for External Relations. In March 2025, he transferred to the corresponding department within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he has served as Deputy Director-General since July 2025.
