The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa hosted the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and South Africa’s Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, marking an important milestone in the two countries’ longstanding partnership.
The agreement establishes a framework for practical cooperation aimed at advancing the rights, opportunities and inclusion of women, young people and persons with disabilities. It reflects a shared commitment to promoting equality, human rights and inclusive development through collaborative programmes and strengthened institutional partnerships.

Speaking during the ceremony, Ambassador Joanne Doornewaard emphasised that the agreement represents more than a symbolic commitment.
“This Memorandum gives practical expression to our shared commitment to advancing human rights, promoting equality, and ensuring that women, young people and persons with disabilities are empowered to participate fully in society. South Africa’s Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, underscored the broader significance of investing in inclusive societies.
“Investing in women, in youth, and in persons with disabilities is investing in stronger families, stronger economies, stronger societies and a more peaceful, more equitable world.”
The Minister noted that empowering historically marginalised groups contributes directly to sustainable economic growth, social cohesion and national development.
