South Africa and the European Union have reaffirmed their longstanding strategic partnership following a high-level visit by the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with South Africa, which concluded this week after a series of engagements aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation.
At the heart of the visit was the 30th Inter-Parliamentary Meeting between the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa and the European Parliament, marking a significant milestone in three decades of sustained parliamentary dialogue. The meeting underscored the enduring relationship between the two partners, founded on shared democratic values, mutual respect and a commitment to addressing global and regional challenges together.
Advancing South Africa’s Just Energy Transition
The European Parliament delegation also met with the Presidential Climate Commission to discuss opportunities for strengthening cooperation in support of South Africa’s Just Energy Transition. Discussions focused on advancing shared climate ambitions while ensuring that the transition to a low-carbon economy remains inclusive, equitable and responsive to the country’s developmental priorities.
The engagement reflects the growing importance of climate diplomacy within the broader EU–South Africa partnership, particularly as both sides seek to accelerate sustainable development and enhance climate resilience.
Social Dialogue at the Centre of Economic Transformation
An exchange with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) highlighted the critical role of social dialogue in promoting inclusive economic growth. Discussions emphasized the need to ensure that workers and local communities remain central to policies aimed at economic transformation and sustainable development.
The engagement demonstrated a shared understanding that successful economic transitions require meaningful participation from labour organisations, social partners and affected communities.
