The Embassy of South Africa in the Netherlands hosted a prestigious National Day Reception at the Marriott Hotel in The Hague, situated alongside the iconic Nelson Mandela Statue, welcoming diplomats, government representatives, business leaders, members of the South African diaspora, and friends of South Africa for an evening celebrating democracy, culture, and international cooperation.
Although this year’s reception was held later than customary due to the Dutch King’s Day celebrations on 27 April, the occasion once again fostered a special sense of belonging among South Africans residing abroad. The event reflected the warmth, hospitality, and strong community spirit that South Africans continue to embody wherever they may be in the world.
Ambassador Madonsela Reflects on South Africa’s Constitutional Milestone
A highlight of the evening was the address delivered by His Excellency Ambassador Madonsela, who reflected on the significance of the year 2026 in South Africa’s democratic journey.
Ambassador Madonsela noted that 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which was adopted on 10 December 1996. Widely regarded as one of the most progressive constitutions in the world, it remains the cornerstone of South Africa’s constitutional democracy, safeguarding the principles of human dignity, equality, justice, freedom, and human rights for all.
His remarks served as a poignant reminder of South Africa’s democratic achievements and the enduring importance of protecting the values and aspirations enshrined in the Constitution.
The Hague and South Africa Strengthen Ties of Cooperation
Guests were also addressed by Jan van Zanen, Mayor of The Hague, who highlighted the longstanding and meaningful relationship between South Africa and The Hague, internationally recognised as the City of Peace and Justice.

Another inspiring contribution came from Ziyanda Buthelezi-Ngcobo, representing Netflix EMEA in Amsterdam.

Emphasising content produced in indigenous languages, she highlighted the streaming platform’s role in showcasing South Africa’s creative talent, diverse landscapes, and rich cultural narratives to viewers around the world.

Special recognition was accorded to Singapi Mlulami, who expertly served as Programme Director for the evening.
