India Appoints Shri Koventhan IFS as New Consul General in Johannesburg, South Africa

Shri Koventhan IFS officially assumed office as the 11th Consul General of India in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 11 June 2026, bringing with him over a decade and a half of distinguished diplomatic and administrative experience within the Indian Foreign Service.

A member of the 2009 Batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Shri Koventhan has served in several key diplomatic assignments across multiple regions, contributing significantly to India’s bilateral engagements and consular services.

Extensive Diplomatic Experience

His overseas postings reflect a broad understanding of India’s growing engagement with diverse regions and underscore his experience in advancing bilateral cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

Prior to his appointment in Johannesburg, Shri Koventhan served in Indian diplomatic missions in Portugal, Brazil, and Bhutan, where he gained extensive experience in political, economic, cultural and consular diplomacy.

Leadership in Passport and Consular Services

In addition to his overseas assignments, Shri Koventhan has held important positions within India’s consular administration. He served as the Regional Passport Officer in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, overseeing passport issuance and citizen services in one of India’s busiest passport jurisdictions.

At the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, he served as both Director and Joint Secretary in the Passport Seva Project Division, playing a significant role in strengthening and modernising India’s passport and consular service delivery mechanisms.

The Passport Seva Project has been instrumental in enhancing accessibility, efficiency and transparency in passport services for Indian citizens both domestically and abroad.

Strengthening India–South Africa Relations

Shri Koventhan assumes his new responsibilities at a time when relations between India and South Africa continue to expand across trade, investment, education, technology, and multilateral cooperation.

The Consulate General of India in Johannesburg serves a vital role in promoting India’s interests in South Africa’s economic hub while providing essential consular services to the Indian diaspora and fostering stronger people-to-people ties between the two countries.

With his extensive diplomatic background and experience in consular affairs, Shri Koventhan’s appointment is expected to further enhance engagement between India and South Africa and deepen the longstanding partnership shared by the two nations.
