Diplomats and Distinguished Guests Gather for National Day Celebration
The Embassy of the Republic of Croatia hosted a distinguished Statehood Day celebration in Pretoria, bringing together members of the diplomatic corps, government representatives, business leaders, academics, members of the Croatian community, and friends of Croatia to commemorate one of the country’s most significant national occasions.
Croatia’s Statehood Day, observed annually on 30 May, marks the constituting session of the first democratically elected Croatian Parliament in 1990, a milestone that laid the foundations for the country’s democratic development and eventual independence.
The celebration served as an opportunity to reflect on Croatia’s democratic journey, honour its national achievements, and reaffirm the growing partnership between Croatia and South Africa.
Formal Proceedings Begin with National Anthems
Guests were welcomed upon arrival by Ambassador Ante Cicvarić and members of the Embassy of Croatia before the formal programme commenced.
Proceedings opened with the singing of the national anthems of the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of South Africa, underscoring the friendship and diplomatic relations shared between the two nations.
The ceremony was attended by ambassadors, high commissioners, representatives of government departments, members of civil society, and leaders from various sectors, reflecting the strong diplomatic engagement between Croatia and South Africa.
Ambassador Ante Cicvarić Reflects on Croatia’s Democratic Journey
Delivering the keynote address, Ambassador Ante Cicvarić reflected on Croatia’s path towards sovereignty and democratic governance.
He noted that the Croatian people, through their commitment to democratic values, political pluralism, and national self-determination, embarked on a historic journey that culminated in independence following the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia.
The Ambassador paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during Croatia’s Homeland War and acknowledged the contribution of all who helped secure the country’s freedom and territorial integrity.
He emphasised that democracy remains central to Croatia’s national identity and highlighted the country’s transformation into a modern European state that actively contributes to international peace, security, and cooperation as a member of the European Union and NATO.

Croatia Highlights Growing Relations with South Africa
Ambassador Cicvarić described South Africa as an important partner and praised the positive development of bilateral relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992.
He highlighted shared values including democracy, constitutional governance, human dignity, and respect for the rule of law, noting that these principles continue to underpin cooperation between the two countries.
The Ambassador also pointed to opportunities for deeper collaboration in trade, investment, renewable energy, information and communication technology, education, science, and sustainable development.
Tourism and people-to-people exchanges were identified as additional areas with significant potential for growth.
South Africa Congratulates Croatia on Statehood Day
Speaking on behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, Adv. Melanchton Makobe, Acting Director-General of the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, conveyed South Africa’s congratulations to the Government and people of Croatia.
He described Statehood Day as a celebration of the resilience and determination of the Croatian people and acknowledged the progress Croatia has achieved since gaining independence.
Adv. Makobe noted that South Africa and Croatia established diplomatic relations during a period when both nations were undergoing major political transformation, creating a foundation of mutual understanding and respect that continues to shape bilateral relations today.

Strengthening Political and Economic Cooperation
The Acting Director-General welcomed the steady growth of political relations between the two countries and highlighted the importance of recent bilateral consultations aimed at expanding cooperation.
He noted that discussions between South African and Croatian officials have identified several priority areas for future collaboration, including healthcare, green transition initiatives, parliamentary cooperation, and engagement on regional and international matters.
Adv. Makobe further highlighted encouraging growth in trade between the two countries and reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to attracting investment and strengthening commercial partnerships.

One of the key themes of South Africa’s address was the potential for cooperation in the maritime sector.
Recognising Croatia’s expertise in maritime industries, naval architecture, and marine engineering, Adv. Makobe highlighted opportunities for collaboration under South Africa’s Operation Phakisa programme, which seeks to unlock the economic potential of the country’s oceans.
He encouraged stronger cooperation in skills development, technical training, marine engineering, and maritime education to support the growth of South Africa’s ocean economy.

Both Croatia and South Africa identified education and tourism as important pillars for future engagement.
The speakers highlighted opportunities for academic exchanges, institutional partnerships, skills development programmes, and collaboration in science and technology.
Tourism was also recognised as a valuable avenue for strengthening people-to-people relations and fostering greater understanding between the citizens of both countries.

Following their respective addresses, Ambassador Cicvarić and Adv. Makobe proposed ceremonial toasts in honour of the friendship and cooperation between Croatia and South Africa.
The toasts reflected the shared commitment of both countries to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation across political, economic, cultural, and educational spheres.

A highlight of the celebration was a special cultural performance by Croatian artists who travelled from Croatia to participate in the Statehood Day programme.
The performers presented traditional Croatian music, providing guests with an authentic cultural experience and offering a glimpse into Croatia’s rich artistic heritage.
The performance added a vibrant cultural dimension to the diplomatic celebration and was warmly received by attendees.
