Diplomats, government officials, members of the Polish community, business representatives and invited guests gathered in Pretoria for the celebration of Poland’s National Day, commemorating the historic Constitution of 3 May 1791, regarded as one of the world’s earliest modern constitutions.
The reception was hosted by the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Republic of Poland to South Africa, Mr. Jacek Chodorowicz, together with Mrs. Monika Herbst-Chodorowicz, at the Polish Residence in Colbyn, Pretoria.
The event celebrated Poland’s national heritage while also highlighting the strengthening political, economic and diplomatic relations between Poland and South Africa.
Significance of Poland’s Constitution Day
Poland’s Constitution Day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of 3 May 1791, recognised as the first modern constitution in Europe and the second in the world after that of the United States.
The day symbolises democracy, constitutional governance, sovereignty and national resilience, and remains one of the most significant national celebrations in Poland.
The celebration in Pretoria also reflected the growing partnership between South Africa and Poland across diplomacy, trade, science, technology and investment cooperation.
Ambassador Jacek Chodorowicz Highlights Upcoming High-Level Engagements
Addressing guests during the formal programme, Mr. Jacek Chodorowicz reflected on the growing relationship between Poland and South Africa and the importance of continued diplomatic and economic engagement between the two countries.
Mr. Chodorowicz announced that both the Prime Minister of Poland and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland are expected to visit South Africa in the coming weeks, signalling a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation with the African continent.
The Ambassador further stated that the Polish Foreign Minister is expected to undertake an official visit to South Africa in early July.
A major highlight of the address was the announcement that the Joint Commission for Scientific and Commercial Cooperation (JCSC) is expected to be officially launched during the July visit. The initiative is expected to deepen institutional cooperation between South Africa and Poland in areas such as trade, science, innovation, technology and investment.
In a special moment during the programme, Mr. Chodorowicz addressed members of the Polish community in the Polish language, acknowledging their contribution towards strengthening cultural and people-to-people relations between Poland and South Africa.
South Africa Reaffirms Economic Cooperation with Poland
Representing the South African government, Director-General of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), Mr. Simphiwe Hamilton, attended the reception on behalf of the Minister.
Mr. Hamilton reflected on the importance of strengthening economic and commercial cooperation between South Africa and Poland, particularly in strategic sectors such as manufacturing, industrial development, technology, innovation and trade.
The Director-General emphasised the value of bilateral economic partnerships in promoting inclusive growth, investment and industrial collaboration between the two countries.
The address also highlighted the significance of continued engagement through economic commissions and institutional cooperation mechanisms aimed at expanding trade and investment opportunities between South Africa and Poland.

The upcoming high-level visits by Polish leadership are also expected to further strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between Pretoria and Warsaw.
