The Embassy of Cuba, in collaboration with the University of Pretoria, hosted a commemorative programme titled “Fidel and Mandela: The Legacy of Great Leaders” on 24 March 2026 at the Javett Art Centre.
The event brought together academics, diplomats and students to reflect on the enduring friendship between Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela. Proceedings began with a visual showcase of the venue, followed by a video tracing the historic bond between the two leaders, including Castro’s visit to South Africa for Mandela’s inauguration.
University of Pretoria Vice-Chancellor, Francis Petersen, welcomed attendees and emphasised the importance of revisiting the legacy of global leaders whose partnerships shaped international solidarity and cooperation.
Reflections from the Panel
The panel discussion featured Minister Dr. Blade Nzimande of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and Cuban Ambassador Fakri Rodríguez Pinelo.
Dr. Dlamini-Zuma reflected on Cuba’s influence on South Africa’s healthcare system, recalling how its primary healthcare model inspired local reforms. She highlighted the Cuban medical training programme, which has produced over 3,000 South African doctors, and Cuba’s intervention in sustaining the medical school in Mthatha.
Minister Dr. Nzimande spoke of deepening educational ties, noting that a new bilateral agreement is imminent. He also pointed to Cuba’s expertise in vaccine production and encouraged continued student solidarity.
Ambassador Fakri Rodríguez Pinelo shared personal insights, noting his longstanding connection to South Africa and emphasising the historical relationship between Castro and Mandela, forged long before they met in person.
Engagement and Closing
The programme included a video featuring prominent South African voices reflecting on Castro’s legacy, followed by an interactive Q&A session. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Rakeshnie Ramoutar, after which attendees engaged in informal discussions, reinforcing the enduring relevance of Cuba–South Africa relations.
