Karnataka’s $360bn Economy Draws South African Focus
South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, Prof. Anil Sooklal, met with Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Doddalahalli Kempegowda Shivakumar (DK Shivakumar), on 5 February 2026 for in-depth discussions aimed at expanding economic and trade relations between the two regions.
The talks focused on unlocking new opportunities in bilateral cooperation, leveraging Karnataka’s status as one of India’s leading economic powerhouses. With an estimated GDP of approximately $360 billion (around ₹30.7 trillion), Karnataka ranks third among Indian states in economic output, driven by strengths in information technology, manufacturing, innovation, and services.
The meeting highlighted mutual interests in trade enhancement, investment flows, and shared growth initiatives. As a dynamic partner, Karnataka offers significant potential for South African businesses in sectors such as technology, minerals, and sustainable development, while South Africa’s resources and markets present avenues for Karnataka’s exporters.
