Hendricks Visits Somali Embassy: Focus on Security, Business, and New Immigration Policies

Somali Ambassador to South Africa, H.E. Mohamed Issak Ibrahim, hosted Deputy Minister of Social Development, Hon. Ganief Hendricks, at the Somali Embassy on 27 January. The high-level meeting centred on bolstering diplomatic and cooperative relations between Somalia and South Africa, with both leaders emphasising transparent collaboration for mutual governmental interests.

The Ambassador highlighted pressing challenges faced by the Somali community in South Africa, including security concerns, business operations, legal protections, and the implications of recent policy developments. Particular attention was given to the revised White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection, endorsed by the South African Cabinet, which proposes significant reforms to immigration and refugee frameworks amid public consultation.

The two officials committed to joint efforts in addressing community grievances constructively, ensuring the safety, livelihoods, and rights of Somalis in the country. The engagement underscores growing bilateral engagement to support diaspora welfare while advancing shared priorities.
